South African Champion Sparks Controversy After Gold Medal Win
South African shot put star Aiden Smith may have won gold at the 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships, but his biggest headline came off the field.
The athlete, who secured victory with a throw of 20.01m, openly criticized the conditions athletes are facing at the tournament in Accra, Ghana, describing the experience as far below expectations.
Despite standing on the podium ahead of Egypt’s Mostafa Amr Ahmed and Cameroon’s Billy Jospen Takougoum, Smith appeared visibly frustrated while discussing the treatment competitors have received.
“We Had No Blankets” — Smith Details Accommodation Problems
The South African athlete claimed athletes arrived expecting proper hotel-style accommodation but were instead faced with difficult living conditions.
Among the issues he highlighted were:
- No blankets provided
- Limited access to air conditioning controls
- Lack of toilet paper
- Problems with water supply
- No access to cold water or fridges
“We got sheets, we got a pillow, but no blanket.”
“The aircon remote had to be requested at reception, and you can’t even keep it.”
“There was no toilet paper. We had to go ask for it.”
Smith also claimed athletes were forced to manage with minimal comfort while preparing for continental competition.
Food Restrictions Leave Athletes Furious
One of the strongest criticisms came over the feeding arrangements.
According to Smith, athletes were allegedly restricted in the quantity of food they could take despite the physical demands of elite competition.
“We’re not allowed to take more than one chicken bone.”
“You can’t take chicken and fish together.”
“In the morning they give me half an egg or one egg.”
The shot put champion explained that his normal training diet is significantly larger and said the limited portions made recovery difficult.
“At home, I eat eight or nine eggs in-season. Here, I’m only allowed one.”
Smith Clarifies: “I Love Ghana”
Despite his harsh criticism, Smith insisted his comments were not an attack on Ghana itself.
The athlete praised the country and revealed plans to remain behind after the competition to explore and enjoy the local environment.
“I love Ghana. Ghana is amazing.”
“We’re going to explore it for the next week.”
His comments have already sparked major debate across African sports circles, with many fans questioning how continental competitions should better support athletes in the future.
Pressure Mounts On Organisers
The controversy now places fresh attention on organisers of the African Senior Athletics Championships and the standard of athlete welfare at major African sporting events.
With several athletes already speaking privately about conditions, Smith’s public outburst could increase pressure on officials to address concerns around:
- Accommodation
- Nutrition
- Recovery facilities
- Athlete welfare standards
The championships continue at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Accra.
