Super Eagles Suffer Blow as Salim Fago Lawal Ruled Out of Unity Cup
Eric Chelle will have to plan without one of his promising attackers for this month’s Unity Cup in London. The Malian tactician has been forced to cross Salim Fago Lawal off his list due to a season-ending injury.
The Czech-based forward falls into the category of players Chelle wanted to assess more closely — those who have received limited opportunities at the international level. Lawal had only a peripheral role during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, remaining an unused substitute in four matches and making a fleeting one-minute competitive debut against Uganda.
“The forward will remain sidelined until the end of the 2025–2026 season.”

According to the Czech regional newspaper Plzeňský deník, Lawal’s recovery timeline effectively rules him out of not only the Unity Cup at The Valley but also the upcoming friendly matches against Poland and Portugal.
The striker has not played for FC Viktoria Plzeň since picking up the injury in the opening minutes of a league game against Bohemians. That same setback also caused him to miss Nigeria’s March international fixtures against Iran and Jordan.
Before the injury, the former Flying Eagles forward had made nine appearances for Viktoria Plzeň, scoring twice.
Salim Fago Lawal is not the only Nigerian striker unavailable for the Unity Cup. Cyriel Dessers has also been ruled out after suffering a season-ending injury.
What This Means for Chelle’s Plans
With key attackers missing, the Unity Cup becomes an important platform for the Super Eagles coach to evaluate new players of Nigerian descent and give more game time to those who have been on the fringes of the national team setup.
Key Highlights:
- Salim Fago Lawal – Long-term injury, unavailable for Unity Cup and friendlies
- Cyriel Dessers – Season-ending injury
- Eric Chelle – Focused on assessing fresh talent in London
Nigeria fans will be watching closely to see which new faces step up in London as the Super Eagles continue their preparations for future competitions.
